"It's time for something different, something bold – something that doesn't just pour money down the throat of wasteful, top-down government schemes," Prime Minister David Cameron told the nation in his Big Society speech in July. Faced with a potentially crippling budget deficit, the coalition is laying the foundation for a radical and comprehensive programme that will "turn government completely on its head", give "professionals much more freedom" and "open up public services to new providers".

The Public Servant Conference 2010 will be an important national forum – following the Comprehensive Spending Review – to explore how this vision is to be turned into reality by public sector leaders and managers, public service providers and stakeholders, business, communities, social enterprise and civil society.
